This is a personal self portrait illustrated to help improve my style and skill within digital art and illustration. A self portrait was a simple task to carry out, especially for improvement. Created digitally on Procreate. (Fig. 1)
This is a personal piece also created to adjust to my new art style. I asked online for users to send their original character (OC) for me to illustrate in my style for free. I thought this task helped a lot due to drawing based on someone else’s illustration. Created digitally on Procreate. (Fig. 2)
This series of illustrations were designed and drawn by myself for my close friends’ Christmas cards in 2022. The designs were based from their favourite animal, and if they had a hobby I tried to tie that into the design, for example, the sheep knitting in Fig. 5. I wanted to make something that my friends could keep, and in the process it helped me get some practice with drawing animals. Created digitally on Procreate. (Fig. 3, Fig. 4, Fig. 5)
This series of prints were made in a GCSE workshop when local,Northern Irish artist Robert Peters came to my school. There is a small variety of colour and pattern, which I think creates different moods and auras. Created with dry point etching on plastic plates with ink and paper. (Fig. 6, Fig. 7)
This piece was created in GCSE with a mix of 9 different mark making techniques separated by a grid marked out. This gave me time to experiment with techniques that I may have never heard of or tried out before, also giving me ideas of what i can use in future pieces. Created with black biro pen on paper. (Fig. 8)
This piece was created near the beginning of AS level to help get back into the swing of school after summer. It is a life drawing made with a continuous line technique. I like how the piece demonstrates my movements, where i went as i progressed. Created with black biro pen on paper. (Fig. 9)
This is another life continuous line drawing made at AS level, but with a twist. There are 3 pen colours used, and I repeated the same drawing each time with a new colour. This helped me improve after each colour and in the end created a nice layered drawing. Created with felt tip pen on paper. (Fig. 10)
This is another series of prints made in a workshop with Robert Peters when he returned to the shool at AS level. There were new techniques used this time, including salt etching and printing onto Fabric. I can see improvement in these prints from the last time Robert Peters held a workshop in GCSE, espcially in the etching of the lines. Created with dry point etching in plastic plate on paper and fabric, and salt etching in metal plate on paper. (Fig. 11)
These two studies were my first attempts at using oil paints. The study at the top of the page is a copy of a painting by William Scott, and the other is a piece inspired by other paintings by William Scott. I found the oil paint difficult to use and found myself using a lot of paint. Created with oil paint on card. (Fig. 12)
Here are some examples of textile work created at AS level. There were a few techniques used, one including machine sewing. It was my first time ever using a sewing machine and it took time to adjust, especially figuring out which way to move my fabric and how much pressure should be applied to the pedal. (Fig. 13)
This piece is of a heart model created at AS level. The task was to look at one body part of our choice, and to help choose which body part we were told make it personal, for example, someone who wears glasses can focus on the eye. I decided to focus on the heart as I have a heart condition, which made this piece more personal. Created digitally with Procreate. (Fig. 14, Fig. 15)
These images include my January mock examination from AS level and a step by step of how it was created. The theme that year was “Unexpected” and in my interpretation i focused on themes of death and life. The piece includes a rhyme about magpies with the phrase “three for a funeral” which ties in the three birds at a graveyard. Created digitally with Procreate. (Fig. 16, Fig. 17)
These images are of my final AS level June examination, with the theme “unexpected”. Similarly to my January mock examination I focused on themes including death and decay. The piece is a double vinyl record, with one themed around love and life and the other based around death and decay. Created with mixed media including clay work, acrylic paint, and digital illustrations on Procreate. (Fig. 18, Fig. 19, Fig. 20, Fig. 21, Fig. 22, Fig. 23)
Our theme for A2 level is “Viewpoint”. I decided to go down the direction of landscapes for this theme and began to develop my ideas and possible medias i could use. This piece is a copy of a Claude Monet painting. I enjoyed creating this piece as i can see all the texture and mixes of colour used. Created with oil pastels on paper. (Fig. 24)
Continuing from my copy of a Claude Monet painting, I attempted a similar style in the same medium but using my own photograph. In my opinion i captured a similar style to Claude Monet’s piece, including the addition of a building in a piece mostly containing plants and nature. Created with oil pastels on paper. (Fig. 25)
Before I was fully set on going with landscapes for my theme, i attempted a portrait study, a copy of a painting from Thomas Saliot’s “Mouth” collection. I found this study challenging but nonetheless I think the painting turned out well, I just thought I would be better focusing on landscapes. Created with acrylic paint on paper. (Fig. 26)
This is a copy of one of Belinda Del Pesco’s pieces, created to try out new mediums with my theme for “Viewpoint” being landscape. I’m actually rather happy with how the final piece turned out, the colours especially. Created with watercolour paint and coloured pencils on paper. (Fig. 27)
These illustrations are from my “Helper Bot” animation in AS level Moving Image Arts. The animation is about a small robot gaining human like emotions after its creator’s passing. But without its creator, the robot slowly breaks down, helping life thrive around him in the process. The full animation is available to watch here. Created digitally on Procreate. (Fig. 28, Fig. 29, Fig. 30, Fig. 31)
This is a small collection of illustrations from my current A2 level Moving Image Arts animation “Breanna’s Bakery”, which is still a work in progress. The animation is a short rivals to lovers story when a new cafe owner moves into town across from Breanna’s bakery. Created digitally on Procreate. (Fig. 32, Fig. 33, Fig. 34)
